What is an Environment Clearance License?

Environment Clearance License in Bangladesh

An environment clearance license is a special authorization from the Department of the Environment. This license determines the impact of the proposed industry or project on the environment.

The government can directly regulate the risky manufacturers by permitting the environment clearance license.

After considering the environmental impact, the government introduced the Bangladesh Environmental Conservation Act of 1995.

According to this act, every industry or project must need environmental approval from the Department of Environment.

More precisely, no industrial establishment is allowed without obtaining an environment clearance license.

What are the Categories of Environment Clearance License?

Environment Clearance License in Bangladesh

There are four different categories of environment clearance licenses: Green, Orange-A, Orange-B, and Red.

Each category has its own characteristics. For example, the safest industries or projects are in the Green category, and the most harmful projects are in the Red category.

For a broader understanding, consider the subsequent discussion.

Green

This type of industry or project is considered as safe for the environment. That’s why these projects belong to the green group.

These groups of industries need the least documents, and getting the approval is much easier.

For instance, the Green group of projects doesn’t need the Initial Environmental Evaluation or Environmental Impact Assessment report to get the license.

Orange-A

The Orage-A category is less safe than the Green category. These industries don’t produce much waste and are considered harmless for the environment.

Most importantly, the waste produced by these industries has a mild environmental impact.

Orange-B

Projects or industries placed under the Orange-B group are considered environmentally harmful.

However, the environmental impacts can be lessened with proper maintenance and remediation.

For instance, the Orange-B group includes fish processing, soft drinks manufacturing, and mineral water manufacturing plants.

Red

As the name suggests, projects or industries severely impacting the local ecosystem are included in this group.

These industries must ensure the best protection while handling the waste. These projects face several obstacles while managing the license.
